March 13, 2006Maine paper mill workers file asbestos lawsuit

Two former paper mill workers, both of whom have been diagnosed with the deadly mesothelioma cancer, have filed suit against asbestos makers and distributors. Emile Richard worked at International Paper Mill for 25 years, and James Crowley worked at Oxford Paper Mill for three. They claim that asbestos exposure at the mills is the cause of their disease.

Although this asbestos lawsuit does not name the paper mills, it includes an insurance company, a plumbing company and several dozen other companies that may be liable for their mesothelioma diagnoses.

Richard and Crowley, who live in Maine, requested co-counsel from two Pennsylvania lawyers who have a track record with asbestos and mesothelioma lawsuits. One of them, Suzanne Johnson, said, “It’s a pretty awful disease. It’s a very painful process of dying.”

Asbestos, a known carcinogen, has been linked to mesothelioma and other forms of cancer. According to records, tens of thousands of people with asbestos-related illnesses have not filed suit for compensation for their pain and suffering.
