Several Minnesota state senators are calling for the firing of the state’s health commissioner for failing to release information about an increase in mesothelioma deaths among miners. The senators called on Gov. Tim Pawlenty to fire health commissioner Diane Mandernach for failing to disclose the results of a study into mesothelioma cases among workers in the state’s “Iron Range.” Read more...

June 13, 2007 Asbestos diseases affecting broader segments of the population

A new study by an advocacy group for asbestos diseases says that younger patients and those with no history of asbestos exposure are being diagnosed with diseases like mesothelioma in increased numbers. The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) says that women, patients under 40 and those who have never worked around asbestos represent an increased proportion of those diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases. A woman from Minnesota has filed a mesothelioma lawsuit in Illinois against 72 defendant corporations. Lonna Morrison alleges that asbestos particles carried home from work on her husband’s clothing caused her to receive a mesothelioma diagnosis earlier this year. Read more...
