Bill would require more transparency from asbestos trusts

May 29th, 2013

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee passed a bill this week that would require more transparency from asbestos trusts charged with paying out money to asbestos and mesothelioma victims. Part of the bill would require trusts to make public the requests they receive and payments they issue.

Many companies have asbestos trust funds set up to pay patients who were exposed to asbestos either while working for the company or because asbestos was in the company’s products. Many factory workers, miners and other industrial professionals have suffered from asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a carcinogenic building substance used primarily from the 1940s through the 1970s. Asbestos exposure is the leading cause of mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer that attacks the lungs and abdominal wall, and can take decades to develop.
