British woman receives more than $450K in mesothelioma lawsuit

April 28th, 2012

The wife of a man who died from mesothelioma cancer has received more than $450,000 from a lawsuit against the company where he worked. David Bean was an engineer with Bristol Water company for decades, where he was routinely exposed to asbestos without being provided with masks or other protection.

Mr. Bean was employed by Bristol Water from the 1950s through 1992, where he worked on pumping stations that were covered with asbestos cement lagging. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2010 and died from the disease one year later. His wife Jean Bean filed the asbestos lawsuit on his behalf.

Workplace asbestos exposure affects thousands of workers every year. The carcinogenic releases fibers into the air when disturbed. When breathed in, these fibers can lodge in the lungs and eventually develop into severe diseases, including asbestosis and mesothelioma—a deadly form of cancer often attacking the lungs and abdominal cavity.
