Fire exposes apartment residents to asbestos

January 3rd, 2013

Residents of a North Carolina apartment complex who were displaced after a fire have not been able to return due to an asbestos outbreak. Seven families in eight units lost valuables not just to the fire, but to asbestos exposure after the fire revealed asbestos insulation in the walls.

A clean-up crew has been ordered to dispose of contaminated personal belongings, and foot traffic is prohibited in an effort to not stir asbestos fibers further. Asbestos is a carcinogenic substance that can lead to severe diseases, including asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer.

Mesothelioma attacks the lungs and abdominal cavity when inhaled and can take decades to develop after initial exposure to asbestos. The highest rate of asbestos exposure occurs in factories and workplaces where products containing asbestos were previously manufactured, including shipyards.
