Former English Premier League star fears mesothelioma from asbestos exposure

January 30th, 2015

Former English Premier League football star Stuart Pearce has spoken out about potentially contracting mesothelioma from asbestos exposure during his years as an electrician. Pearce spent four years wiring homes, schools and other buildings laden with asbestos prior to becoming one of England’s best defenders and managers.

Pearce says his employers never warned them of the risks of asbestos though likely knowing of its presence. “We were briefed on safety hats and boots but I don’t recall asbestos mentioned once — It’s chilling to think of the risks we were exposed to,” says Pearce. “Sending workers into a building with asbestos without warning of the dangers was asking for trouble.”

Pearce has publicly supported the British Health and Safety Executive’s campaign, Every Job Beware Asbestos, which warns of the dangers of workplace asbestos exposure. Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma cancer, which claims thousands of lives every year.
