Four plaintiffs file asbestos lawsuit in WV

April 11th, 2007

Three couples and an additional plaintiff have filed an asbestos lawsuit in West Virginia against 163 defendant plants and corporations. Two of the couples are from Ohio, while the remaining defendants are from West Virginia.

In their asbestos lawsuit, the plaintiffs claim that they were exposed to airborne asbestos fibers while working in industrial jobs in West Virginia. They allege that this asbestos exposure caused them to develop severe illnesses, including asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.

They say that the companies and plants named in their asbestos lawsuit were aware of the dangers of asbestos exposure but failed to warn employees of these risks. They are seeking punitive and compensatory damages.

Asbestos was once commonly used in buildings and industrial products for its insulating and heat-protecting properties until the risks of asbestos exposure were widely publicized. Because of these risks, very few products containing asbestos are still used in the U.S. But due to the fact that it can take up to 50 years after asbestos exposure for a patient to develop symptoms of asbestosis or mesothelioma, many people who were exposed to asbestos decades ago are only beginning to display asbestos symptoms from their illnesses.
