Mesothelioma fears still plague 9/11 survivors

October 7th, 2013

Thousands of New Yorkers still fear the risk of asbestos-related diseases they might face after 9/11. More than 2,000 tons of pulverized asbestos contaminated the New York air for weeks following the destruction of buildings during the terrorist attack.

The cancer rate for first-responders at 9/11 has increased 19%, but the increase in mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos-related diseases likely won’t be known for at least 20 years. Mesothelioma can take decades to develop after initial asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a carcinogenic building material used primarily from the 1940s through 1970s. Thousands of mesothelioma lawsuits have been filed by patients who were exposed to asbestos unknowingly during work, or in other hazardous environments.
