September 19th, 2013

In an op-ed published in the Huffington Post, mesothelioma survivor Heather Von St. James has urged readers to dedicate their social networking statuses to Mesothelioma Awareness Day, held annually on September 26th. Von St. James has survived mesothelioma for 7 years, nearly 5.5 years longer than average.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day has slowly grown over the years, as more cities and organizations make a point to acknowledge the deadly disease. Von St. James suggests dedicating Facebook, twitter and other social network updates to spreading awareness on September 26th.

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer that can attack the lungs and abdominal lining. Mesothelioma is a direct result of asbestos exposure, and can take decades to develop. The disease affects more than 4,000 Americans every year.
